585 Rideau Squadron cadets have the opportunity to be awarded special recognition for leadership, fitness, citizenship, and individual achievement throughout their career with the Squadron. These awards are described below.
Marksmanship awards
Marksman
This distinction is presented to cadets who score two five-pellet groupings within 3 cm.
First Class Marksman
This distinction is presented to cadets who score two five-pellet groupings within 2.5 cm.
Expert Marksman
This distinction is presented to cadets who score two five-pellet groupings within 2 cm.
Distinguished Marksman
This distinction is presented to cadets who score two five-pellet groupings within 1.5 cm.
Squadron Junior Marksman Award
This award is presented annually to the Squadron top shot for a junior cadet (under 15 years of age).
Squadron Senior Marksman Award
This award is presented annually to the Squadron top shot for a senior cadet (15 years of age and above).
Attendance awards
Attendance awards are presented annually to Squadron first-year through sixth-year cadets who have missed no more than 2 regular training nights in a training year.
Dress, Drill, and Deportment Award
This award is presented annually to the Squadron cadet who demonstrates outstanding dress, drill, performance, and overall positive interaction with peers and superiors.
Sam Cameron Memorial Air Crew Survival Award
This award is presented annually to the Squadron cadet who demonstrates efficiency and enthusiasm in aircrew survival skills throughout the training year.
Leadership and instruction awards
Squadron Junior Leadership Award
This award is presented annually to the Squadron Junior Non-Commissioned Member (NCM)—Cpl to FCpl—who demonstrates positive and motivational leadership towards subordinates and peers.
Squadron Senior Leadership Award
This award is presented annually to the Squadron Senior Non-Commissioned Member (NCM)—Sgt to WO1—who demonstrates positive and motivational leadership towards subordinates and peers.
Squadron Top Cadet Instructor
This award is presented annually to the Squadron cadet who demonstrates proficiency in instructional technique throughout the training year.
Spirit Award
This award is presented annually to the Squadron cadet who displays the highest esprit de corps and motivation throughout the training year.
Dick Donaldson Award for Top Recruit
This award is presented annually to the cadet who best exemplifies completed training and performance in various activities during the cadet’s first year in the Squadron.
Doug Walton Memorial for Community Service and Citizenship
This award is presented annually to the cadet who best exemplifies community service with the Squadron and on their own time.
Aviation awards
Barry Charbonneau Memorial Award for Aviation Study
This award is presented annually to the cadet who scores the top mark during the Squadron final aviation examination during Glider Pilot Scholarship or Power Pilot Scholarship preparations.
Mike Shea Memorial Award
This award is presented annually to the cadet who best exemplifies the interest and promotion of flying and aviation training.
Air Cadet League of Canada awards and certificates
Air Cadet League of Canada Post-Secondary Scholarship Awards
The Air Cadet League of Canada offers three post-secondary education scholarship awards to Royal Canadian Air Cadets. They are the Birchall Scholarship, the Dale Scholarship, and the Young Citizen Foundation Scholarship. They are awarded on the basis of secondary school scholastic achievement combined with outstanding performance as an Air Cadet. Air Cadet League Certificate
This certificate is presented to retiring cadets who have completed the Air Cadet training syllabus.
Air Cadet Service Certificate
This certificate is presented to departing cadets who have competed at least 3 years with the Air Cadet programme.
O’Blenis Trophy and Cadet Scholarship
This honour is presented annually to the graduating cadet who has displayed the highest level of enthusiasm and dedication to the Air Cadet motto “To Learn – To Serve – To Advance.”

Royal Canadian Legion Medal of Excellence
The Royal Canadian Legion (RCL) Cadet Medal of Excellence is awarded in recognition for individual endeavours in citizenship that meet or enhance the aims and objectives of the cadet movement. For more information, see Royal Canadian Legion Cadet Medal of Excellence.
Lord Strathcona Medal
The Lord Strathcona Trust Fund Medal, most commonly referred to as the Lord Strathcona Medal, is the highest award that which can be bestowed upon a cadet in recognition of exemplary performance in physical and military training. For more information, see Lord Strathcona Medal.
