FSgt Owen Baillon and FCpl Tavo Stringel competed at the Provincial Biathlon Competition again this year. The competition was again held at the Algoma Rod and Gun club outside of Sault Ste Marie. Baillon and Stringel have represented 585 Sqn at the provincial competition several times now.

On February 8th, they boarded the bus and made the long trek to the Soo, accompanied by FSgt Corbett Marsh, who was a cadet coach, and Capt Cordy, the team staff representative. The competition was held on Saturday and Sunday, 9 and 10 February. After the medal ceremony on Sunday afternoon, they hopped back on the bus for the return journey to Ottawa.

Weather this year was almost perfect, not too cold, with excellent snow conditions. Wind was factor on the first day of competition causing many good shooters to miss their targets. Sunday’s range performance was better overall. Our biathletes placed 7th overall as a team and Stringel earned a silver medal in the Open Male category. Congratulations, Tavo!

It was a successful weekend of competition and the 585 cadets and staff represented the squadron admirably. Well done.

Training for biathlon begins in September of the training year. Practices are held on Saturdays. Weather permitting, a few ski practices are scheduled for late December and the Christmas break. All interested cadets are invited to come out to give it a try.
