28 March 2020
The Commander of the National Cadet and Junior Canadian Rangers Support Group has issued new direction cancelling all cadet activities through April 30, 2020. We expect further direction prior to April 30, including if this cancellation will be extended.
Captain Cordy, our Training Officer has been working on ways we can keep cadets engaged in the program. Once Captain Cordy, the senior cadets and I have had a chance to hold a virtual meeting I will be in contact with you again to let you know what our plans are going forward. I can tell you that we are not planning on holding virtual classroom instruction. We hope to be able to provide activities that can be accomplished at a time and pace that works for each family in the situation in which they find themselves.
It is very important that we establish at least minimal two way communications. Starting this Wednesday April 1, 2020 I am asking that each Parent, Guardian, or cadet check-in with the squadron either using the Absence Notification Form, or calling the squadron phone number 613-283-9990 and leaving a message. When you fill out the form or leave a message please also let us know your cadet’s current status:
- Sheltering in place; or
- Isolating/Quarantined and give a reason:
- 14 day isolation following a trip or exposure to someone positive for COVID-19;
- presenting COVID-19 symptoms but not confirmed by a test; or
- have tested positive for COVID-19.
I am required to report the Squadron status to Area Head Quarters who will forward it on. This information will be used to monitor the health of the Canadian Cadet Organization and help make correct decisions going forward.
These check-ins may also be important in the resolution of the cadet year. I will also know who is receiving this information and be able to take action to ensure everyone is.
We will continue to promote cadets when they meet requirements. We are also going to award the Legion Medal of Excellence, Lord Strathcona Medal, and all Squadron awards based on the existing year and participation going forward both remote and in-person when the cancellation end. We will make these presentations at the first suitable opportunity after in-person training resumes. Cadet volunteerism is important in some of these medals and awards. If you have not already done so, now is a good time to let us know what you have been doing as a volunteer outside of cadets.
At present Area Headquarters is still working as if our May activities will go ahead. That includes a number of training opportunities including an FTX and the ACR. We will continue to work towards holding local training events, but also preparing for them to be cancelled.
If you have any questions or problems please contact me using my cadet email address, or my personal cell number, both below.
